Wild Horse Nine: Darkly Humorous Espionage on the Big Screen

When a CIA agent casually prepares two young Chilean students for what awaits their country, a cinematic evening begins in Wild Horse Nine that is both deadpan and politically charged. The filmforum Duisburg presents Martin McDonagh's new tragicomedy on November 27, 2026.

Between Secret Service and Dark Humor

Shortly before the Chilean military coup of 1973, CIA agents Chris and Lee are sent from Santiago to Easter Island. Amidst the monumental Moai, remote landscapes, and an atmosphere of latent conspiracy, their mission becomes unbalanced. Chris develops an unexpected closeness to two rebellious students, while his long-standing partnership with Lee is marked by distrust, loyalty, and dark humor.

Martin McDonagh's Precise Dramaturgy

Director and screenwriter Martin McDonagh merges political farce, espionage film, and melancholic character study. His direction relies on sharply crafted dialogues, abrupt tonal shifts, and characters whose casual remarks often open a world of moral contradictions. From the apparent ease of small talk, a suffocating tension emerges.

John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, and a High-Profile Ensemble

John Malkovich plays Chris with controlled eccentricity and an apparent weariness behind the facade of the seasoned agent. Sam Rockwell embodies Lee as an impulsive counterpoint. Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo, Ailín Salas, Tom Waits, and Parker Posey complete the ensemble. The acting thrives on the friction between deadpan comedy, political unrest, and personal vulnerability.

A Cinematic Image Between Island Scope and Political Shadow

Easter Island becomes the atmospheric backdrop of a film where open horizons and secret operations stand in contrast. Vast landscapes, historical tension, and McDonagh's dry rhythm create a stage experience on screen: At first, the world seems to stand still, then a single sentence shifts the entire situation.

Conclusion: An Unusual Film Evening at the filmforum
