A magical family opera about courage and imagination
When toys turn into a living city, a musical adventure full of dragons, pirates, and mysterious prophecies begins at the Duisburg Theater. Samuel Penderbayne's family opera The Enchanted City is aimed at audiences aged eight and older, combining captivating musical theater with a story about togetherness, bravery, and the limitless power of imagination.
Philipp and Lucy enter another world
Philipp feels sidelined by his mother and her new partner. He also initially struggles to find common ground with his stepsister Lucy. In his self-built toy world, he seeks refuge – until one night it comes to life and transforms into a mysterious city.
Lucy has secretly followed Philipp. The inhabitants of the city are expecting two special strangers: one of them is supposed to be the prophesied destroyer, the other the longed-for savior. Caught between old prophecies and new dangers, the two children find themselves in an adventure that they can only survive together.
From musical tones to classical opera
Samuel Penderbayne's composition consciously transcends genre boundaries. Musicals energy meets classical opera tradition, while the dramaturgy seriously acknowledges the perspective of young people. The music accompanies the transformation of the toy world into a grand stage reality and opens up space for tension, humor, and emotional twists.
The libretto is by Susanne Lütje and Anne X. Weber and is based on the children's book of the same name by Edith Nesbit. The staging is by Louisa Proske. Momme Hinrichs designs the set and costumes, while Judith Selenko is responsible for the video. Musically, the Duisburg Philharmonic and the choir of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein participate.
A stage experience for the whole family
The theater atmosphere thrives on the contrast between familiar toys and an ever-expanding fantasy world. Dragons, pirates, and the threat posed by a true destroyer give the production a fairytale-like tension. The artistry and singing lead the young audience right into a world where imagination becomes a force of action.
The performance lasts about an hour and a half and will be presented without an intermission in German with surtitles. As a production of the Young Opera Rhine-Ruhr, The Enchanted City combines musical quality with an age-appropriate approach to stage art.
