A magical city comes to life
When toys suddenly breathe, dragons soar through imagination, and two siblings discover their courage amidst prophecies, pirates, and impending danger, an extraordinary stage experience begins at the Theater Duisburg: The Enchanted City by Samuel Penderbayne combines family opera, musical sounds, and classical opera into an adventurous journey for audiences aged eight and above.
Between the play world and grand opera
At the center are Philipp and his stepsister Lucy. Philipp feels excluded from the new family situation and creates his own world out of toys. One mysterious night, this toy world becomes a inhabited city. Lucy secretly follows him - and soon both are caught up in the pull of an ancient prophecy.
The inhabitants believe the children are the foretold destroyer and the long-awaited savior. But who among them plays which role? The dramaturgy guides the young audience through a story about unity, belonging, and the limitless power of imagination.
Music between musical and classical opera
Samuel Penderbayne's composition consciously transcends genre boundaries. A colorful sound between musical and classical opera accompanies the changing scenes and gives the production its own musical breath. The orchestra of the Duisburg Philharmonic and the choir of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein create a lively acoustics where adventure, excitement, and magical transformation meet.
A production full of movement and imagination
Director Louisa Proske, together with set and costume designer Momme Hinrichs, develops a theatrical world where fantastic spaces emerge from everyday objects. Video elements by Judith Selenko extend the stage and blur the boundaries between children’s rooms, magic city, and dangerous adventure.
The production relies on precise acting, imaginative costumes, and a changeable lighting atmosphere. Dragons, pirates, and mysterious city dwellers become stations on a journey whose true power lies in the encounter of two children who must learn to trust each other.
Young opera for curious families
The Enchanted City was created based on the children's book of the same name by Edith Nesbit. The libretto is by Susanne Lütje and Anne X. Weber. The production is a collaboration within the framework of the Young Operas Rhein-Ruhr and is aimed at children ages eight and up, families, as well as school classes.
The performance lasts about an hour and a half and is presented without an intermission in German with supertitles. The musical direction is by Azim Karimov, and the dramaturgy is by Katie Campbell and Anna Melcher.
Conclusion: A stage experience about courage and unity
Visitors can expect a family opera with great imagination, versatile music, and a story that takes young people seriously. The Enchanted City opens the curtain to a world where play can become reality and strangeness can become community. Those who want to experience theatrical atmosphere, musical adventures, and visually striking stage art should undertake this journey live at the Große Haus of the Theater Duisburg.
