Scrooge: Dickens' Christmas Classic at the Theater Duisburg

When winter blankets Duisburg and the lights of the Christmas season shine brighter, the door to a famous story about greed, loneliness, and late humanity opens in FOYER III of the Theater Duisburg. Scrooge – A Christmas Story by Charles Dickens will tell the tale of a bitter businessman’s transformation on December 27, 2026.

A Night Between Shadows and Hope

Ebenezer Scrooge meets Christmas with contempt. For him, Christmas means waste, closeness feels like a burden, and compassion is a weakness. He even denies his employee time off for family. But on this night, events take an eerie turn: ghosts from the past, present, and future lead Scrooge through the hidden rooms of his own life.

Dramaturgy with Strong Emotional Contrast

The production focuses Dickens' socially critical narrative on its central conflict: What happens when a person loses sight of others? From coldness grows movement, from defense arises understanding. The direction condenses the material into an immediate stage experience where acting, atmosphere, and the fairy-tale-dark dramaturgy intertwine closely.

Theater Atmosphere in FOYER III

FOYER III creates an intimate setting for this Christmas story. Between light and shadow, a stage world unfolds, where encounters with the ghosts feel like cracks in Scrooge's self-constructed fortress. The closeness to the events intensifies every audience reaction: a frightened look, a quiet laugh, and the silent tension before the next twist become part of the evening.

A Christmas Play About Change

Charles Dickens combines in Scrooge gothic romance, social critique, and a surprisingly warm message. The story reminds us that humanity does not arise from possession, but from encounter. Especially in the time between the holidays, this classic gains special resonance.
