Les Misérables: Victor Hugo's great revolutionary drama on screen
On November 21, 2026, the filmforum Duisburg will transform into a stage of French history: Fred Cavayé's new adaptation of Les Misérables narrates Victor Hugo's inexhaustible classic as an opulent revolutionary drama with the excitement of a modern thriller.
A classic between melodrama and suspense cinema
Jean Valjean, Cosette, Fantine, and Inspector Javert encounter each other in a story that connects social inequality, guilt, mercy, and justice with great emotional force. Director and screenwriter Fred Cavayé particularly focuses on the main characters and their conflict-laden dynamics.
Javert appears not only as a relentless pursuer. In Tahar Rahim's interpretation, the character gains additional psychological depth, giving the dramaturgy new tension. Vincent Lindon and Camille Cottin are also part of the high-caliber ensemble.
Opulent images and a new dynamic
The production expands the boundaries of the classic melodrama with elements of suspense and action cinema. Optical opulence, powerful scene settings, and dramatically heightened direction bring Hugo's far-reaching universe to life as a grand performance before the audience's eyes.
With a runtime of 176 minutes, the film unfolds its narrative in epic breadth. The French original version with German subtitles preserves the linguistic sound and special atmosphere of the historical material.
French Film Week at filmforum Duisburg
The filmforum provides the atmosphere of a traditional movie palace with modern image and sound technology for this extraordinary film event. The historic cinema hall at Dellplatz combines cultural context with an immediate stage experience in front of the screen: light, acoustics, and concentrated audience reactions create an evening for lovers of sophisticated cinematic art.
Conclusion: A great material in a new form
