FESTE: Mask theater between glamour, servitude and bitter slapstick
A magnificent villa by the sea, a wedding approaching, and behind the shiny facades an invisible army: In FESTE, FAMILIE FLÖZ brings the societal tensions of celebration to the stage. On February 13, 2027, the Great House of the Theater Duisburg transforms into a venue where luxury and exhaustion, dignity and dependency clash head-on.
When work begins behind the celebration
While everything in front is adorned for the grand celebration, deliveries are made, cleaned, cleared, guarded, and disposed of in the dark operating yard. The employees give their best to ensure the social highlight goes off without a hitch. But under the flawless surface, the pressure mounts: The people in the shadows fight for respect, recognition, and their own dignity.
Mask poetry with a political eye
FAMILIE FLÖZ connects wordless theater, precise body work, and expressive masks into a distinctive stage art. Michael Vogel's production tells with looks, gestures, rhythm, and choreographed acting what language often formulates awkwardly. The set design by Felix Nolze and the costumes by Mascha Schubert create a world between a splendid villa and a functional backstage.
Dramaturgy between tragedy and comedy
The dramaturgy of FESTE thrives on sharp contrast: the glamour of the reception is followed by the harshness of daily work, the funny moment leads to silent injury. The extravagant use of natural resources, the social divide between rich and poor, and the search for individual happiness form the societal resonance space of this production.
Typical for FAMILIE FLÖZ, a blend of bitter tragedy and delightful slapstick arises from this. Small gestures become major conflicts, a shifted glance can make a hierarchy visible, and seemingly trivial movements grow into an intense stage experience. The audience experiences a theatrical atmosphere with high visual precision and an acoustics in which even silence gains meaning.
A co-production with its own theatrical handwriting
FESTE was created as a co-production by FAMILIE FLÖZ, Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Theater Duisburg, and Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel. The stage features Andrés Angulo, Johannes Stubenvoll, and Thomas van Ouwerkerk. Directed by Michael Vogel, co-directed by Björn Leese; masks and set design shape the characteristic visual language of this internationally renowned theater group.
