Adams Eight: Rowing, Courage, and the Hunger for Olympic Gold

When nine young men get into a boat, an exciting journey of teamwork, discipline, and historical sports history begins at the filmforum Duisburg. Adams Eight tells the story of an ambitious rowing eight from Schleswig-Holstein that pushes through obstacles to reach the Olympic Games.

An Underdog Team Bets It All

At the center is Karl Adam, played by Oliver Masucci. As a teacher, he recognizes the potential in young men who lack guidance and perspective. With a consistent training concept, he shapes eight rowers and their coxswain into a cohesive unit. Tactics, rhythm, and physical endurance determine each stroke.

Formation, Pressing, and Field Tension on the Water

The film makes the dynamics of rowing palpable: a team only functions when every athlete masters their position and implements the shared system in the same rhythm. From individual talents, a formation arises that overcomes strain, doubt, and competition. The historical sports story connects intense training scenes with the dream of Olympic gold.

Historical Sports Film with Great Emotional Impact

The plot takes place in the year 1960 and follows the team on their journey to Rome. Hannu Salonen blends sporting tension with the social background of early West Germany. The story of the German eight gains a personal perspective: behind the later success are young athletes, hard preparation, and a coach who believes in a seemingly impossible vision.
