Wolf Biermann's tumultuous life on the big screen

The documentary Biermann showcases the life of one of the most influential German singer-songwriters, poets, and political artists on Monday, November 9, 2026, at filmforum Duisburg. The screening starts at 5:45 PM and intertwines personal biography with German contemporary history.

An artist between song, poetry, and political resistance

Wolf Biermann was born in 1936 in Hamburg and experienced the tensions of German division first-hand as a singer-songwriter, activist, and poet. His lyrics combine sharp social criticism with poetic imagery. The film focuses on a personality whose work remains closely tied to German-German history.

Documentary with historical depth

The approximately 120-minute production contextualizes Biermann's artistic development, his public impact, and his role as an uncomfortable observer of political upheavals. Archival material, interviews, and biographical milestones converge into a portrait of attitude, contradiction, and the power of the spoken word.

Cinema hall instead of concert stage

A concentrated live atmosphere is created at filmforum: dimmed lights, precise cinema sound, and the collective attention of the audience give space to the songs, poems, and historical images. The concert experience gives way to a cinematic stage performance in which orchestration, montage, and acoustic dramaturgy make Biermann's impact newly perceivable.

An evening for music and history enthusiasts

The film appeals to fans of political song art as well as visitors interested in German post-war history, the GDR, and cultural resistance. The documentary narrative connects personal memories with a broader historical perspective.

Conclusion: Biermann promises an intense cinema evening about music, poetry, political responsibility, and an extraordinary artistic life. Those who want to experience Wolf Biermann's voice and significance in historical context will find the right setting at filmforum Duisburg.
