Wolf Biermann at filmforum Duisburg: A life between song, dispute, and history
On Friday, November 6, 2026, filmforum Duisburg will show the documentary Biermann. The screening begins at 6:00 PM and focuses on the songwriter, poet, and political activist Wolf Biermann, who celebrates his 90th birthday in 2026.
Music as a key to a turbulent century
Director Jens Meurer approaches Wolf Biermann through his musical work. His songs became voices of dissent and accompany a biography that is closely linked to the division of Germany, the history of the GDR, and the political culture of the Federal Republic.
Personal encounters and historical images
The film combines conversations with contemporary documents and previously unpublished archival images. Biermann recounts his childhood in Nazi Germany, his move to the GDR, and the political conflicts that culminated in his expulsion in 1976.
Voices include Joachim Gauck, Campino, and Wolfgang Niedecken. The quiet moments, in which Biermann recounts his life by the Elbe River, resonate particularly strongly: with fire, self-irony, and a keen eye on a divided, united, and once again tense Germany.
Cinematic experience with musical depth
The two-hour documentary does not rely on a distant chronology but rather on atmosphere, memory, and stage presence. Songs, voices, and archival material come together to create a personal portrait of an artist whose poetic power has shaped political debates for decades.
Conclusion: A film evening about attitude and encouragement
Biermann promises a concentrated concert experience at filmforum Duisburg without a concert stage: a musical portrait of art, political stance, and the strength to not be embittered in tough times. Those who want to experience Wolf Biermann and German contemporary history up close will find here a compelling cinema evening.
