Wolf Biermann on the Screen: A Life Between Songs and Contradictions
On Sunday, November 1, 2026, the filmforum Duisburg will show the documentary Biermann. The screening begins at 6:00 PM and takes approximately 120 minutes to delve into the tumultuous life of the songwriter, poet, and political artist Wolf Biermann.
Poetic Power Meets German History
Wolf Biermann's songs have accompanied political and social upheavals for over six decades. The film approaches this century figure through their music, their stance, and their impact on several generations. From songs, memories, and historical experiences, a personal portrait with great historical depth emerges.
A Kaleidoscope of Five German Life Worlds
Director Jens Meurer combines conversations with young artists, politicians, and members of Biermann's family with previously unpublished archival footage. The montage opens a view of five different versions of Germany and shows how closely Biermann's biography is linked with German-German history.
Film Stage Performance in the Cinema Hall
The musical dramaturgy forms the common thread of the documentary film. Between precise montage, historical images, and the immediate presence of the artist, a concentrated live atmosphere develops in the cinema hall. The acoustics of the filmforum give room for the songs, while light, imagery, and synchronization enhance the emotional impact of the memories.
An Evening for Music and History Enthusiasts
Biermann is aimed at all who appreciate political song art, German post-war history, and personal artist portraits. The FSK-0 documentary combines biographical context with musical energy and makes visible why Wolf Biermann continues to polarize and inspire to this day.
The audience can expect a compelling concert experience without a concert stage: a two-hour film portrait in which voice, stance, and contemporary history merge. Anyone wishing to experience Wolf Biermann's work and his significance for German cultural history directly should not miss this evening at the filmforum.
