Discover your own images with light, time, and imagination

How were photos created before smartphones and digital cameras took over our daily lives? In the three-day holiday workshop "Build Your Own Pinhole Camera – Photography like 200 Years Ago," young people aged 10 to 14 dive into the fascinating early history of photography. At the Central Library Duisburg, participants will build, experiment, photograph, and develop.

A personal camera from simple materials

The workshop begins with an exciting construction project: Participants create their own pinhole camera and learn how light passes through a small opening to create an image. The hands-on work enhances creativity, fine motor skills, and technical understanding. Each self-built camera becomes a personal tool for a special learning experience.

Experience photography with all senses

In a real darkroom, photographic paper and photo chemistry are prepared. Then, the young people photograph with their self-built cameras and develop the images by hand. The moment when light, patience, and a small experiment result in a visible image brings wonder, curiosity, and genuine childlike laughter.

History becomes a personal experience

The workshop combines media education, creativity, and cultural history. Young people experience firsthand how photography worked around 200 years ago and simultaneously discover how technological developments have changed our perception. The age-appropriate concept promotes independent thinking, collective learning, and joy in experimenting.

Creatively together during the autumn break

This family experience is aimed at young people between 10 and 14 years old. The workshop takes place over three consecutive days from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Attendance at all sessions is required. The program is supported by the Kulturrucksack NRW initiative and is free of charge.

Conclusion: A holiday workshop with visible results

Construction materials, darkroom, photographic paper, and exciting experiments make this workshop a special time full of learning fun. If you want to not only look at photography but also understand and create it yourself, experience a creative holiday adventure with lasting images at the Central Library Duisburg.
