Herbert List at Thyssen: Photography between Industry, Modernity, and Poetic Observation

On November 10, 2026, Astrid Dörnemann M.A. from the thyssenkrupp Corporate Archives will give a lecture Herbert List. A Magnum Photographer at Thyssen. At the State Archives NRW in Duisburg, a photographer takes center stage whose artistic visual language conveys a blend of classical form, surreal composition, and documentary precision.

A Photographer with an Eye for the Magical

Herbert List, born in 1903 in Hamburg, intertwined his photographic work with an intense engagement with literature, art history, classicism, and surrealism. His early still lifes and portraits exhibit a meticulous construction of images where light, body, architecture, and material merge into poetic visual orders. The lecture places List's work within the European photography history of the 20th century.

From Classical Form to Photographic Modernity

List developed a unique aesthetic between staged photography and spontaneous observation. Greek temples, ancient sculptures, landscapes, ruins, artist portraits, and urban scenes became motifs for a visual research on time, beauty, and transience. Later, his photography opened more to everyday life and the social movements of the post-war period.

Herbert List and the Visual World of Thyssen

The connection of List's photographic work with the history of the Thyssen Group is particularly appealing. His images of the August Thyssen Steelworks lead into an industrial visual world of steel, smoke, work processes, and monumental facilities. Between technical architecture and human labor, a tension field is created that not only documents industrial modernity but also makes it visible as an aesthetic experiential space.

The thyssenkrupp Corporate Archives as a Place of Cultural Education

Astrid Dörnemann M.A. works at the thyssenkrupp Corporate Archives, which preserves historical documents, photographs, films, and other sources related to corporate and industrial history. The lecture thus connects art historical analysis, historical research, and cultural education. The State Archives NRW creates a concentrated exhibition atmosphere in which photographic sources become readable testimonies of social change.

An Evening for Photography and History Enthusiasts

The lecture begins on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 6:00 PM. An hour before the start, there is an opportunity to get to know the State Archives on a free tour. Afterwards, the State Archives invites attendees to a reception. The art experience targets all who are interested in photography, industrial history, archival work, and the aesthetic experience of historical images.

The audience can expect an informed approach to Herbert List and his special ability to transform reality into composed visual worlds. Those who wish to experience photography as a connection of document, memory, and visual poetry should definitely attend this evening at the State Archives NRW.
