Conversation Workshop – a film evening about language, closeness, and communication

At filmforum Duisburg, Conversation Workshop – Consultation Hour on October 13, 2026, leads into an unusual discussion group at the Paris Centre Pompidou. A refugee from Syria, a banker from the UK, students from China, and a judge from Turkey learn French there – and talk about much more than just grammar.

When language becomes a shared living space

The documentary by Bernhard Braunstein observes over 18 months and 26 sessions how a conversation course evolves into a language laboratory and a place of exchange. The participants share stories about their daily lives, discuss social issues, and talk about homesickness, belonging, and different experiences.

Quiet images, intense audience atmosphere

The minimalist staging focuses on faces, gestures, and pauses in conversation. Smiles, skepticism, and annoyed glances carry as much weight as the spoken words. This creates a concentrated event atmosphere where the audience listens attentively and experiences the power of interpersonal communication.

Award-winning documentary filmmaking

Director Bernhard Braunstein won the ARTE Documentary Film Prize worth 6,000 euros at the conclusion of the Duisburg Film Week 2017. The 74-minute documentary is shown in its original French version with German subtitles. A film discussion with director Bernhard Braunstein will deepen the impressions of the evening afterward.

Event planning and context

The screening is part of the Duisburg in Image series and is organized by VHS Duisburg in cooperation with the Duisburg Film Week and the Franco-German Society. The filmforum welcomes its audience in the atmosphere of a historical cinema palace from the 1950s equipped with modern media technology.

Conclusion

Visitors can expect a compelling documentary about language, migration, and social dialogue – accompanied by a personal film discussion with the director. Those seeking cinema as a shared event experience with lasting food for thought will find this evening at the filmforum particularly immediate.
