Organ Sounds on the Camino: Mona Hartmann Plays PEREGRINUS in Duisburg
On Sunday, November 29, 2026, St. Ludger Church in Duisburg will transform into an impressive sound space. The organist Mona Hartmann will present at 6 PM, among other pieces, the organ cycle PEREGRINUS by Dominik Susteck – a musical exploration of the Camino and the inner experiences of pilgrimage.
A Musical Path Between Resonance and Silence
The organ music of Dominik Susteck approaches the pilgrimage path not as a mere travelogue. In six movements, the cycle reveals forms of experience, perception, and change. Sound surfaces, dynamic compressions, and quiet moments guide the listener through a composition that combines avant-garde eruptions with sonic poetry.
In the acoustics of St. Ludger Church, the instrument unfolds its full spatial effect. Deep registers carry the sound through the nave, while finely tuned timbres and precise articulation create a multifaceted orchestration. The conducting will be handled by the organist herself: hands and feet control registration, dynamics, and synchronization in immediate connection.
Mona Hartmann: Virtuosity with an International Format
Mona Hartmann, born in 1994 in Moscow and now based in Witten, studied church music and organ at the universities in Detmold and Leipzig. She completed her training with honors in the master class of Prof. Dr. Martin Schmeding. As a prizewinner of international organ competitions, she has performed at events including the Bachfest Leipzig, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Mozarteum Salzburg, and St Thomas Fifth Avenue in New York.
In 2022, Hartmann debuted with Thierry Escaich's Concerto for Organ and Orchestra at the Gewandhaus Leipzig. Radio recordings for ORF and Deutschlandfunk Kultur document her artistic presence. With the album Chaconne 1927, released in 2024 by the Aeolus label, she also made a mark in the current organ scene. Since the winter semester of 2025/26, she has been teaching as a professor of organ literature performance at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Witten.
PEREGRINUS Live: A Special Encounter with New Organ Music
The organ cycle was premiered on September 26, 2026, in Hamm with Mona Hartmann. In Duisburg, the work now receives another special performance venue. The live atmosphere of the church, the long reverberation time, and the immediate proximity between audience and instrument make the concert a concentrated listening experience.
Visitors can expect not an ordinary concert evening, but a sonic journey through inner spaces: from rhythmic movement and powerful sound blocks to moments where single tones resonate long in the space. The combination of contemporary composition, sacred acoustics, and virtuosic stage performance speaks equally to organ fans, lovers of modern music, and curious concertgoers.
Admission and Concert Date
The concert begins on Sunday, November 29, 2026, at 6 PM and is expected to last until 7 PM. The venue is St. Ludger Church at Ludgeriplatz 33 in Duisburg. The date is part of the concert series Concert on Sunday by the Parish of Liebfrauen Duisburg Mitte.
