The program features iconic film music classics by Henry Mancini, Nino Rota, and Ennio Morricone.

When film music shines before the inner eye

Films do not only live from their images. It is the music that gives scenes tension, elegance, humor, and emotional depth. In Duisburg, the Mercatorhalle transforms into a sound space where familiar themes unfold their full orchestral effect. Henry Mancini's mysteriously seductive theme from The Pink Panther sneaks through the evening with a dancer's ease.

Oscar-winning melodies and Italian sound art

Henry Mancini received a total of 18 Oscar nominations and won four Oscars, including for the music to Breakfast at Tiffany's. His song Moon River was also awarded an Oscar. Nino Rota shaped the film language of the 20th century with his music for The Godfather II and received an Oscar for it. Ennio Morricone, the third great name on the program, won two Oscars and made film music history with the soundtracks to Once Upon a Time in the West and A Fistful of Dollars.

Alessandro De Marchi: precise conducting with dramatic energy

Alessandro De Marchi is the Conductor in Residence of the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2026/2027 season. As a specialist in historically informed performance practices, he combines thorough source work with clear articulation, finely balanced dynamics, and a dramatic sense. His stage performance shapes orchestration, synchronization, and sound into a concert evening that creates musical images immediately.

Festive live atmosphere in the Mercatorhalle

The Philharmonie Mercatorhalle provides the perfect setting for this New Year concert. Transparent voices, distinctive brass colors, and rhythmic precision meet the special audience atmosphere of a concert evening at the beginning of the year. Ohrenkino leads through elegant, mysterious, and dramatic sound worlds – from Hollywood's iconic melodies to the unmistakable colors of Italian cinema.
