Fancy Free: When the Saxophone Brings Jazz History to Life
On December 4, 2026, R.L. Madison invites you to a special concert evening at the adult education center in Stadtfenster. Under the title Fancy Free – The Saxophone in Jazz, the ensemble combines musical information with soulful, jazzy, funky, and bluesy live sound.
Saxophone Sounds between Soul, Jazz, and Funk
The saxophone is the focus of an evening that makes its defining role in jazz music audible and perceptible. Powerful horn sections, smooth melodies, and a rich percussion section meet the characteristic blend of modern jazz, funk, and soul that R.L. Madison is known for.
Two Saxophones, a Versatile Ensemble Sound
Thomas Käseberg has been part of the saxophone sound of R.L. Madison since 2016. For this program, he is joined by Romano Schubert, with whom he also plays in the Kokopelli Saxophone Quartet. Together, they shape the orchestration and dynamics of the evening, while piano, guitar, bass, and percussion consolidate the groove.
Musical Expertise Meets Stage Energy
Joachim Heßler on piano, Friedhelm Pottel on guitar, and Ralf Wißdorf on bass create the harmonic foundation. Birdy Steppuhn, Annan Odametey, and Richard Donkor provide rhythmic synchronization and movement on the percussions. This creates a live atmosphere in which expertise, stage performance, and immediate audience mood intertwine.
A Concert Evening for Jazz Fans and the Curious
Fancy Free is aimed at all who love the sound of the saxophone and want to learn more about its tradition in jazz. Between bluesy warmth, funky accents, and soulful passages, a varied concert experience develops in the lecture hall of VHS Duisburg.

On December 4, 2026, R.L. Madison brings a versatile saxophone program to Duisburg. Those who want to not only hear jazz but also experience its sound language and development directly will find an evening full of groove, musical depth, and vibrant stage energy at Fancy Free.
