Wolf Biermann on the Screen: A Life Between Songs and Contradictions

The filmforum Duisburg will show the documentary Biermann by director Jens Meurer on November 11, 2026. The focus is on Wolf Biermann, the songwriter, activist, and poet born in Hamburg in 1936. The screening starts at 8:00 PM and lasts 120 minutes.

Music as the Common Thread of a Tumultuous Biography

The documentary approaches Wolf Biermann through his musical work and poetic language. His songs form the emotional core of a portrait that connects personal memories, historical breaks, and German post-war history.

An Artist Between East and West

Jens Meurer traces Biermann's journey from childhood in Nazi Germany to his move to East Germany in 1953, and his life between East and West. The Cologne concert and his expatriation from East Germany in 1976 are also significant milestones in this life.

Encounters with Contemporary Witnesses and Companions

The camera follows Wolf Biermann in conversations with young artists, politicians, and his family. Joachim Gauck, Campino, and Wolfgang Niedecken share their thoughts. These encounters are complemented by historical film footage and previously unpublished archival images.

Personal Cinema with Political Resonance

Between the Elbe River, concert hall, and archival material, a multifaceted kaleidoscope of a life emerges in five different versions of Germany. Biermann tells his story with fire, self-irony, and unwavering conviction. This connects intimate moments with a precise historical and societal context of music.

The Concert Experience in the Cinema Hall

Even without a live stage, the film unfolds an intense musical atmosphere. Songs, voices, historical images, and the concentrated acoustics of the cinema hall lead to a unique concert experience on the screen. The artist's stage performance is made tangible through filmic montage, personal conversations, and the power of his lyrics.

Conclusion: An Evening for Music, Memory, and Conviction

Biermann promises a compelling cinema evening about an artist whose voice is closely tied to German history. Those who experience political song art, poetic biographies, and documentary cinema with a musical heartbeat will find a strong reason to visit filmforum Duisburg.
