Wolf Biermann's tumultuous life on the big screen
The documentary Biermann takes the audience on a two-hour journey through the life of a formative German artistic personality on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at filmforum Duisburg. The screening begins at 6:00 PM and combines music, personal memories, and German-German contemporary history into a compelling cinematic experience.
Poetic power and political upheavals
Wolf Biermann's songs have accompanied societal debates and triggered political tremors for over six decades. The film approaches the singer-songwriter, poet, and activist through his music and shows how closely his artistic path is intertwined with the fractures of German history.
A life in five versions of Germany
Director Jens Meurer guides the audience through a collage of current encounters, personal moments, and historical archival footage. Wolf Biermann meets young artists, politicians, and members of his family. This material is supplemented by previously unpublished images from archives. Thus, a personal kaleidoscope of a life between Hamburg, GDR, exile, return, and reunified Germany is created.
Cinematic orchestration with a musical heartbeat
The music forms the dramatic starting point of the documentary. Between song lyrics, contemporary documents, and conversations, a multilayered synchronization of memory and present emerges. The artist's stage performance is not isolated at the center but is understood as a key to his stance, his language, and his unbroken presence.
A special cinema evening at filmforum
The filmforum at Dellplatz provides the perfect setting for this encounter with Wolf Biermann. As a municipal cinema, the venue combines historical cinema hall atmosphere with modern media technology. The film lasts about 120 minutes and is released without age restriction.
Conclusion: Visitors can expect not an ordinary portrait but an intense concert experience in a metaphorical sense: a documentary evening where music, memory, and German history merge. Those who wish to experience Wolf Biermann's poetic power and his extraordinary biography on the big screen should mark the date at filmforum Duisburg.
